Warts

What are warts?

Warts are common growths that develop when a virus infects the top layer of the skin.  Skin colored or brown in color, they usually affect the hands and feet but can be found anywhere on the body.

What causes warts?

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus.  They are contagious and develop when broken skin, from minor cuts or other superficial abrasions, contacts another wart or a surface exposed to the virus.

Why did I get a wart?

Anyone can develop a wart.  Some are more prone, including children and teenagers, those who bite or pick at their nails or cuticles, and those with weakened immune systems.

Should I have my warts treated?

Although warts may spontaneously resolve on their own with time (and that may take months to years), warts are often treated when they persist over time, multiply or are painful.  Warts can return at any time or appear in a new area.  Fortunately, there are gentle methods to remove warts, which can be individualized to your age, location, size, and type of warts.
