Molluscum

What is molluscum contagiousm?

Molluscum are small dimpled growths that develop when a virus infects the top layer of the skin.  Skin colored, they usually affect children and some adults, and can be found anywhere on the body.

What causes molluscum?

Warts are caused by a virus.  They are contagious and develop from skin to skin contact with others, from water (swimming pools or bath tubs), or shared towels.

What treatments are available for molluscum?

Although molluscum may spontaneously resolve on their own with time (and that may take months to years), molluscum are often treated as they are highly contagious.  Treatment when there are a few growths is usually more effective and can prevent the spread to other locations on the body, other members of the family and friends. Fortunately, there are gentle pain free methods to remove molluscum, which can be individualized to the number, location and size of molluscum.
