Seborrheic Dermatitis

What is seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common skin concern that manifests as a red, scaly rash.  In adults and adolescents, it can appear on the scalp, eyebrows, center of forehead, ears, skin folds around the nose, eyelids, chest, upper back, armpits and/or genitals.  In newborns and infants, findings are most prominent on the scalp and is known as cradle cap.

What causes seborrheic dermatitis?

There are a number of factors that contribute to the development of seborrheic dermatitis: a yeast that normally lives on the skin, stress, cold dry weather, and one’s overall well being.

How is Seborrheic Dermatitis treated?

As seborrheic dermatitis resembles other rashes, treatment is first dependent on a dermatologist’s evaluation and diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis, distinguishing it between other rashes.

There are many effective treatments to control seborrheic dermatitis.  Skin care regimens tailored to your skin type, coupled with medications applied to the skin and/or scalp can improve the flaking, redness, itching and burning associated with seborrheic dermatitis. As overuse of some of the prescribed medications can have untoward effects, close follow up care is advised.
