Eczema

What is eczema?

Eczema is a common term often used to refer to a number of types of inflammation of the skin.  Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Dyshidrotic Eczema, Stasis Dermatitis are various types of Eczema.

Most often the term eczema is used synonymously with Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic Dermatitis can begin in infancy, when dry itchy skin presents on the scalp, face and/or body.  In young children, eczema presents with itchy skin behind the knees or in the folds of the arms. Most children outgrow eczema.  However, adults who have atopic dermatitis either had eczema as children or rarely present with atopic dermatitis for the first time as adults.   They usually present with eczema on the outer arms and legs or on the body.  If left untreated, dry red itchy skin can progress to raised leathery skin, cracked skin, or become infected presenting with oozing crusty skin.

How is Eczema treated?

There are many effective treatments for eczema.  A dermatologist will tailor a treatment plan that will include a comprehensive skin care regimen, medicines, and holistic, natural approaches to reduce itch, minimize inflammation, clear infections, and prevent atopic dermatitis from worsening.
