Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin concern that can cause redness, flushing, broken blood vessels, and pimples on the face.  The neck, ears, chest and back can also be affected.  There are four types of rosacea, each distinguished by certain skin findings.

Erythemotelangiectatic rosacea is characterized by redness, flushing, and broken blood vessels.

Papulopustular rosacea is notable for redness and acne like breakouts.

Phymatous rosacea is distinguished by prominent swelling of the affected skin.

Ocular rosacea involves the eyes.  Redness and irritation of the eyes and swelling of the eyelid skin often precedes or is found alongside skin findings.

How is rosacea treated?

Rosacea treatment starts with identifying your rosacea triggers and finding ways to control these triggers.  Developing a customized and comprehensive skin care regimen to help prevent rosacea flares is the next step. There are many effective medications, some applied to the skin and others given orally, which can help control the symptoms of rosacea.  In addition procedures such as Intense Pulse Light are useful to minimize the redness and broken blood vessels of rosacea.
